One of the best places to look for a listing of a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats is Business Source Complete.Once the database is open, simply do a search for you company in the search box. If a SWOT Anlaysis is available, there will be a link on the left side of the search results screen.
Unfortunately, Datamonitor does not do a SWOT analysis in every one of the company profiles. If your company has a Datamonitor Company Profile but no SWOT analysis, then you might look at similar companies. For example, if your company is General Motors, and there is no SWOT analysis for that company, then you might look at the company profile for Ford Motor Company. Basically, this assumes that companies in the same industry might have similar strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, since much of this information is based upon industry trends.
NOTE:The Datamonitor reports and SWOT analyses are good sources to get you started. However, they are a bit short and lack in-depth coverage and should not be the only source that you use. Therefore it is strongly recommended that additional resources be consulted. It is advised to use the Datamonitor swot analyses as a framework for developing your own swot anyalysis for a company. Other places to look for information to incorporate into your own SWOT analysis are:
- Encyclopedia of American Industries
- Standard and Poor’s Industry Surveys
- Mergent Online Industry Reports
- Hoover’s Online (both the Industry Overviews and the Company Profiles)
- Plunkett Research Online
- IBISWorld Industry Market Research
