The Libraries initiated an unmediated purchasing program with Kanopy for access to films in their catalog. What this means is that the campus has had access to Kanopy’s full catalog of films. When a film has been viewed for more than 30 seconds four times, then an automatic one year subscription is completed – all use previous to 4th viewing is at no charge. We deposited what we believed would be sufficient funds for the academic year toward this program, however our funds were depleted much earlier than anticipated. Therefore, you might have had access to films in the Kanopy platform that you do not now. If you have a film from their catalog that you have assigned to your class, please let your subject librarian know ASAP so that we can ensure access for you and your students. We are very sorry for any inconvenience. The intention was to improve access to films and we believe we succeeded in that, and now we wish to do our best to ensure continued access to the films you need for your class.
Kanopy Streaming offers a variety of documentary and feature films from an array of producers and distributors including BBC Active, California Newsreel, Criterion Collection/Janus films, Documentary Educational Resources, First Run Features, Green Planet Films, KinoLorberEdu, Media Education Foundation, National Film Board of Canada, PBS, DEFA Film Library.
To facilitate teaching, they can be projected in lecture halls, embedded in authenticated web pages, and watched off-campus (with login) with unlimited simultaneous viewers. Users can also create Playlists and make clips.
Using Kanopy Streaming as the platform, Ohio University has purchased the Gender/Race Studies streaming collection provided by Media Education Foundation.
