International Week Series – International Films

Ed note: Ohio University is celebrating International Week April 14-20, 2013. We are celebrating the week with a series of posts about the Center for International Collections by PACE student Alexis Messenger

Day three of Ohio University’s International Week is here and with it comes another great lineup of activities (we’re partial to “A Taste of Study Abroad” happening today at 5 p.m.).  If you need something to do while you’re waiting for the next International Week event, check out Alden Library’s collection of international films.

The library has a great collection of Southeast Asian films compiled on the SEA Subject Guide by Rafael Martinez of the Southeast Asia Studies department.  There’s a PDF available which lists the videos in the library, as well as an explanation on how to find SEA videos online.  If you need help deciding which video to watch or have any other questions about the Southeast Asia Collection, contact Southeast Asia Reference Librarian Jeff Shane for help.

There is also a collection of Latin American films available to students and staff.  A PDF is available on the Latin American Studies Research Guide with a list of videos.  The research guide has plenty of other information about Latin America as well, from reference books, to articles to websites.  Latin American Studies Librarian Jeff Ferrier is happy to help you find what you need and answer your questions.

You can search the film database by using the ALICE Catalog.  In the subject search type “Feature films – [name of country]” to find films based in and about that specific area.

Looking for specifically feature films? The Finding Films Subject Guide by Subject Librarian Lorraine Wochna has a list of Foreign Films by country. If you’re looking for current films you can also check out the Athens International Film and Video Fest this week or find films previously submitted to the fest available in the library.  If you have any further questions, feel free to ask a librarian.
