The Graduate Research Series @ Alden will kick off again this Spring Semester on Tuesday, March 26 with a presentation by Ohio University School of Theater graduate student Bianca Sams.

In her presentation, titled Research Based Creative Writing, Sams focuses on her style of research which uses historical information and “found stories” to help her develop plays and to enhance the creative writing process.  Her current play, Battle Cry, was created using this method. Sams will discuss all the tools she utilized to reach the finished product. Battle Cry is a historical fiction about Claudette Colvin, a little known Civil Rights heroine.

To create her play, Sams scoured various historical collections and worked closely with Subject Librarian lorraine wochna to search through the collections of books and articles available at Alden Library.

Through the help of C. Michael Gray in the African American Studies Department and grants from the School of Theater, College of Fine Arts, and the African American Studies department, Sams traveled to Alabama State University for six days to conduct further research and gain firsthand experience at the important sites in Montgomery.

The Graduate Research Series @ Alden was created through the combined efforts of Alden Library librarians wochna, Diana Nichols and Hilary Bussell in cooperation with the Graduate Student Senate, with the goal of highlighting the extensive research process of Ohio University graduate students.  Students chosen to present have the opportunity to display their hard work and research findings to their peers and professors.

Sams’s presentation will be on Tuesday, March 26 at 2 p.m. in the Friends of the Library Room (Alden 319).  Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
