Athens Reading Club
The Athens Reading Club, founded in 1871, is comprised of Athens men and women who meet regularly to read aloud from and discuss a wide variety of written works. The Mahn Center has a collection of materials spanning most of the history of this literary society, including several notebooks containing club rules, member lists, and meeting minutes, along with photographs and memorabilia from events and anniversaries. You can also find part of a notebook from the club’s earliest days online (with a transcript) in the Ohio Memory collection. Available pages identify the club’s founding members, which included an Ohio Supreme Court justice and a future United States Congressman, details of the first few meetings, and the first official set of club rules. You can also scroll through the pages, along with some of our comments, below!
