On Thursday, June 15 from 3-4 p.m., the Libraries begins its Authors @Alden Summer Series featuring the work of Ian Adams and Randall Schieber, well-known Ohio environmental and commercial photographers, talking about their recent publication, “Ohio in Photograph: A Portrait of the Buckeye State,” which is filled with 288 full-color photographs.
“Producing a new, large-format book of Ohio photography is not a task to be taken lightly,” wrote Ian Adams. “We decided to make the project even more challenging by committing to include at least one image from each of Ohio’s 88 counties in the book. To the best of my knowledge, no prior book of Ohio landscape photography, including more than a dozen of my own Ohio photography books, had managed to showcase every county in the Buckeye State.”
Adams and Randall Lee Schieber, also a well-known author of six photography books, collaborated to capture images from the 88 counties that make up the state of Ohio, including both urban landmarks and rural landscapes.
“We have always shared ideas and places of interest,” said Schieber, “and since I photograph people and events, and Adams, for the most part, does not; I was delighted when he invited me to collaborate on the book.”
Split into five regional areas, each of the chapters has an introduction by John Fleischman, an editor of Ohio Magazine and a writer of various media. The book includes a forward by Ohio Governor John Kasich.
According to Adams, Governor Kasich was the impetus behind the project.
“Ohio Governor John Kasich helped to instigate the book, when he visited the Museum Bookstore in the State Capitol a couple of years ago and discovered that there were no Ohio picture books available for visitors to purchase.”
Days later, wrote Adams, “I received a phone call from Gillian Berchowitz, director and editor-in-chief at the Ohio University Press, inviting me to collaborate on a new Ohio ‘coffee-table’ book.”
For Adams, this was not the first collaboration with the Press.
“I have produced four photography books with Gillian Berchowitz and her staff at Ohio University Press: ”Our First Family’s Home: The Ohio Governor’s Residence & Heritage Garden” (2008), “A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio” Vol. I and Vol. II (2011/2015)…” before completing “Ohio in Photographs” (2017), which is also published by the Ohio Press.
Based out of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Adams has had over 6,000 photographs featured in publications, including a total of twenty-one photography books, and many other media and magazines.
Join us as Evan Shaw, WOUB editor, videographer and producer, talks with Adams and Schieber about their work, and their collaboration of “Ohio in Photographs: A Portrait of the Buckeye State,” a delightful journey for any Ohioan.
The event, free and open to the public, will be held on the fourth floor of Alden Library. Light refreshments will be served.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase during the event.
