This Fall, we’re continuing our Research Workshop Series with five opportunities to learn about skills that can help you throughout the research process from finding information to sharing your results.
The series kicks off with a hands-on opportunity to learn about the citation management tool Zotero. With Zotero, you can collect citations for journal articles, books, chapters and even books and images as you conduct your research and use that data to create citations as you write. A second session on Zotero will be offered on Friday, October 21. If you have questions about Zotero and can’t make the workshops, you can also contact your subject librarian.
On Monday, October 17, School of Communication Studies PhD student Alane Presswood will offer a session on developing your public speaking skills for presentations that will be especially useful for those of you gearing up for conference presentations or other opportunities to share your research.
Those presentations often mean creating a slide deck or developing a poster. For those of us without a design background, it can be a challenge to move beyond the bullet points and templates to create slides and posters that really communicate the ideas we have to share. So, we’re offering a hands-on workshop in which you can learn some basic strategies you can use to make your slides and posters communicate your ideas with style.
Finally, the series concludes with a workshop on finding data with health sciences librarian Hanna Schmillen. Many scholars and research organizations are now sharing their data online for others’ to replicate the original research and to ask new questions. But with so many places to find this data, it can be hard to find what you need. Schmillen will walk through the options for finding data you can use for your own projects.
The workshops are listed below, with links to the registration page. Registration is not required, but is appreciated for planning purposes. If you have any questions about the workshop series, please contact Jessica Hagman.
